Onan Sule from Plateau State yesterday won gold in the 3000m and also set a new record in the race at the ongoing 7th edition of the National School Sports Festival with a record 10:35sec.
She defeated Jenifer Augustine and Patience Udeme both of Cross River State currently dominating in athletics at the games to second and third positions. Jenifer Augustine raced 10:46 seconds while Patience Udeme finished in 10:52seconds.
Dr Bruce, who has been revolutionalising grassroots sports in Cross River State, automatically offered to give Onan a full athletics and academics scholarship in his sports integrated and academy programme in Cross River State.
He said for the girl to dust highly trained athletes who were in camp for three months in preparation for the festival, she is a potential future star that must be well guided, nurtured and exposed to attain stardom.
“When I saw her I got impressed with her performance and interested in talking to people so as to release her for our integrated sports programme in Cross River State where she will be on full scholarship and sponsorship. She is a future star that needs a well intensified programme. “Since I started attending school sports in 2009 I have identified a number of them one of them I can remember in Kaduna; a primary school girl in 800 metres, a beautiful runner. I told the Kaduna people to allow me take her; I will sponsor her in school and train her and she would be the best in the country in a short while but they refused.
