Boko Haram: FG warns Nigerians over buying used phones, SIM cards THE Federal Government has warned Nigerians to desist from buying used phones and pre-registered SIM cards from uncertain sources, as such phones and SIM cards might have been used for terrorist and criminal activities. Coordinator, National Information Centre and Director-Genera l, National Orientation Agency, Mr Mike Omeri, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja, while briefing journalists on the efforts of the Federal Government in containing the activities of insurgents in the country, He stated that “the caution has become necessary to save members of the public the embarrassment of being apprehended for crimes committed with phones and SIM cards found in their possession. Omeri further advised members of the public to endeavour to report cases of stolen phones and SIM cards to the police, while desisting from purchasing used phones/SIM cards from unknown sources. Omeri also noted that the recent regional ministerial meeting convened to explore ways of achieving international cooperation in tackling the challenge of insurgency in the North-Eastern Nigeria had called for more action in tackling the menace. He further noted that the meeting was convened to look into the level of implementation of the decisions and commitments made at the Paris Summit of May 2014 and the follow up meetings in London and Washington DC. “Particularly, the meeting underscored the need to effectively address the sources of funding and supply of weapons to the Boko Haram and called for greater international cooperation in tackling all forms of illegal transfer of arms and ammunition,” Omeri said. He also added that the forum advocated strict sanctions against terrorist groups, especially the Boko Haram, while commending the effort of the Nigeria government in setting up the Victims Support Fund for alleviating the plight of victims of insurgency.
