Ahead of this year finals of the 16th Nestle Milo secondary schools Basketball championship which is slated for the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos, the finalists have intensified their training to ensure the best is achieved. All the teams now know their opponents with the draws which were held at the Nestle PLC head office in Lagos, Friday afternoon.
The National School Sports Federation President Mallam Ibrahim Muhammed confirmed that the winner at this year championship will fly the nations flag at World Schools Basketball Championship in Linigoes, France from 17th to 25th April 2015.
In view of the motivational packages already put in place by the sponsors, Nestle PLC, the finalists have spoken about their determination to fight for the top position at the championship for
the top position. The captain of Ilupeju Grammar School, representing Lagos state, while declaring his team’s readiness for the battle in the Boys’ Category, says “we have our eyes set on the trophy and the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the World Schools Basketball Championship in France. Our journey to becoming world beaters starts here and we are taking the opportunity provided by Milo with both hands”. This stage, therefore, seems set for keen competition in the finals.
The qualifiers for these finals had emerged from keenly contested qualifiers held in 4 different zones across the country over a period of three months. Some of the qualifying schools are Dutse Model Int’l School and Government Girls Secondary School, Gwawaran, both from Jigawa state, St Augustine Seminary, Ezzamgbo of Ebonyi state; Osadennis High School Asaba and West End Mixed Secondary School, Bayelsa State.
Others are St. Jude’s Girls Secondary School, Amarata, Jesus College, Otukpo, Government Girls Secondary School Gboko and CAC Grammar School, Akure.
Henson Demonstration Group of Schools Benin, Ilupeju Grammar School, Lagos and Yejide Girls Secondary School, Ibadan complete the list of finalists.
And for the first time the NSSF will be working with the Nigeria Academical Sports Commission (NASCOM) for a hitch free Championship.
